Thirty-Three Thousand Insurance Jobs Added in May, Report Says

Atlanta, GA (June 30, 2016) – A report released by the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics on Friday, June 3, revealed a growth of 3,300 insurance jobs in May, a 19 percent decrease in job growth over April.

The monthly Economic Situation Report revealed the insurance carriers and related activities subsector grew by 0.13 percent and now sits at 2,594,400 employed insurance workers with an unemployment rate of 2.6 percent. The subsector consists of professions that underwrite annuities and insurance policies or facilitates the underwriting by selling insurance policies and related services. This includes claims adjusters, examiners and investigators; office managers, supervisors, and administrative support workers; insurance claims and policy processing, insurance sales agents, and insurance underwriters. 

Over the last 12 months, employment in the subsector has increased by 2.5 percent or 62,500 jobs from 2,531,900 in May 2015. The unemployment rate is up by 0.8 percent from 1.5 last year.

Across all industries, total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 38,000 in May. The unemployment rate declined by 0.3 percentage point to 4.7 percent, and the number of unemployed persons declined by 484,000 to 7.4 million. Last month, job growth occurred in health care while employment in mining, information, and manufacturing declined.
