The insurance industry grew by 9,600 jobs for the month of July, according to the latest employment numbers from the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics released on Friday, August 7, 2015. 

The Economic Situation Report revealed that the insurance industry grew by 0.38 percent last month and now sits at 2,555,000 employed insurance workers with an unemployment rate of 1.6 percent. Compared to June’s revised number of 10,400 jobs, July’s employment growth marks a 7.69 percent decrease. Over the past 12 months, the total number of employed insurance workers has increased by 85,400 jobs or 3.46 percent from 2.46 million in July 2015, while the unemployment rate dropped by 1.8 percent from 3.4 percent. 

July’s growth within the insurance carriers and related activities subsector accounted for more than 87 percent of the job growth within the finance and insurance sector (+10,700 jobs), and 56 percent of the growth within the financial activities supersector (+17,000 jobs). Over the last 12 months, the insurance carriers and related activities subsector has contributed 71.7 percent to the finance and insurance sector, and 54.7 percent to the financial activities supersector

Across all industries, total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 215,000 jobs in July, while the unemployment rate remained at 5.3 percent. Over the last 12 months, employment growth has averaged 246,000 jobs per month. In July, job gains occurred in retail trade (+36,000), health care (+28,000), professional and technical services (+27,000), and financial activities (+17,000). 

After revisions, total nonfarm payroll employment for the month of May and June were revised from 254,000 to 260,000 and 223,000 to 231,000 jobs, respectively. With these revisions, employment gains in May and June combined were 14,000 higher than previously reported. Over the past 3 months, job gains have averaged 235,000 per month.
