Insurance Industry Adds 6,200 Jobs in August

The insurance industry saw an increase in employment with the addition of 6,200 jobs for the month of August, according to the latest employment numbers from the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics released earlier this month. 

The insurance carriers and related activities sub-sector grew by 0.25 percent last month and now sits roughly at 2.44 million employed insurance workers. Over the past year, the total number of employed workers has increased by 60,400 insurance jobs, or 2.54 percent. 

The finance and insurance sector as a whole increased by 7,500 jobs in August, or 0.13 percent. Since the beginning of the year, the sector has grown by 0.40 percent or 23,000 jobs.

Overall, the total nonfarm payroll employment increased across all industries by 142,000 jobs in August, while the unemployment was little changed at 6.1 percent (a difference of 0.1 percent over the previous month). There were 4.7 million job openings on the last business day of July (3.3 percent); a figure little changed from the month prior, but significantly higher than January 2014 (+799,000 job openings).
