Insurance Adds 1,900 Jobs in December, Report Says

Leading Insurance Career Site, InsuranceJobs.com Shares Insurance Employment Trends from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Economic Situation Report

Atlanta, GA (January 31, 2018) –  The insurance industry gained 1,900 jobs in December, according to preliminary numbers released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Economic Situation report released on Friday, January 5, 2018.

“The insurance industry has added 30,000 in 2017, down from the 46,300 jobs added in 2016,” said Jay Rollins, owner of the insurance employment website InsuranceJobs.com. “The industry has vacillated between gains and losses on a near monthly basis in 2017, losing a third of jobs gained this year.“

The insurance industry now sits at 2,634,900 employed persons with an unemployment rate of 1.0 percent. “Unemployment reached a 10-year low in December, the lowest unemployment rate since March 2007,” said Rollins.

The insurance industry’s parent sector, finance and insurance, added 3,700 jobs last month after gaining only 700 in November. Over the last year, the finance and insurance sector has added 23,300 jobs.

Across all industries, total nonfarm payroll employment added 148,000 new jobs in December while the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.1 percent for the third straight month. In 2017, payroll employment growth totaled 2.1 million, compared with 2016’s gain of 2.2 million.

Job gains primarily occurred in health care, construction, and manufacturing.
