1,700 Insurance Jobs Lost in January

Atlanta, GA (February 27, 2018) –  The insurance industry lost 1,700 jobs in January according to preliminary numbers released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Economic Situation report released on Friday, February 2, 2018.

“The insurance industry has lost 8,900 jobs since October,” said Jay Rollins, owner of the insurance employment website InsuranceJobs.com. “Comparatively, the insurance industry gained 700 jobs in December, and 9,600 jobs in January 2017.“

The insurance industry now sits at 2,662,100 employed persons with an unemployment rate of 2.2 percent. “Unemployment hasn’t reached 2.2 percent since April of last year,” said Rollins.

Employment within finance and insurance, the insurance industry’s parent sector, added 2,100 jobs in January. The securities, commodity contracts, investments, and funds and trusts subsector added 3,500 jobs in January, the largest number added in the sector last month. Job losses were experienced in credit intermediation and related activities, while monetary authorities neither gained nor lost jobs last month.

Across all industries, total nonfarm payroll employment added 200,000 new jobs in January while the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.1 percent for the fourth consecutive month. Job gains for the month occurred in construction, food services and drinking places, health care, and manufacturing.
