STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action, Result. In can be broken down into the following steps:
- Situation: Using specifics, describe the context behind the challenge. What were you doing? What problems arose?
- Task: Detail your responsibility within the situation, i.e. resolving a conflict with a coworker.
- Action: Next, explain the steps you took to resolve the challenge.
- Result: Detail the results of the actions you took to resolve the situation. What did you accomplish? What did you learn in the process? How can you prevent the situation from occurring in the future?
